John Sterling, the iconic radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees, has retired after 33 seasons on the mic, the team announced on Thursday.

Sterling, who turned 84 in July, has been a beloved figure in the Bronx, known for his signature catchphrases and enthusiastic style. He has called over 5,420 regular season games and 211 postseason games for the Yankees, including their 27 World Series championships.

"John Sterling has been the voice of the Yankees for a generation of fans," said Yankees President Randy Levine. "His passion, energy and love for the game have made him one of the most recognizable figures in baseball. We thank him for his incredible contributions to the Yankees and wish him all the best in his retirement."
