Africa Battery Initiative: Addressing the Importance of Raw Materials for EV Batteries

Breakthrough Announcement

The Africa Battery Initiative (ABI), established in 2020 by African diaspora members, aims to address the growing importance of raw materials used in the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Shifting Energy Landscape

As the world transitions towards green energy, the demand for EV batteries is soaring. This has highlighted the critical role of raw materials such as cobalt, lithium, and graphite, which are essential components in rechargeable batteries.

Africa's Strategic Role

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a major supplier of cobalt, accounting for approximately 70% of the world's production. Other African countries also possess significant reserves of raw materials used in battery manufacturing.

Urgent Need for Action

The ABI recognizes the urgent need to establish a robust supply chain for these materials. By fostering partnerships and leveraging technological advancements, the initiative aims to ensure that Africa plays a leading role in the global transition to green energy.

Diaspora Involvement

African diaspora members living in Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom are actively involved in the ABI. Their expertise and connections in the automotive and energy sectors are vital for its success.

Net Zero Ambitions

The ABI's goal aligns with the global commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. By securing a sustainable and ethical supply chain for battery materials, Africa can contribute significantly to the fight against climate change.
