Pete Buttigieg: A Comprehensive Overview
Early Life and Education
Pete Buttigieg was born on January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana. His father was a professor at the University of Notre Dame, and his mother was a teacher. Buttigieg graduated with honors from Harvard College in 2004 and from the University of Oxford in 2007 as a Rhodes Scholar.
After Oxford, Buttigieg worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 2009 to 2017, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.
Political Career
Buttigieg's political career began in 2011 when he was elected to the South Bend Common Council. He served on the council for eight years, including two years as its president.
In 2019, Buttigieg announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. He ran on a progressive platform that included support for universal healthcare, a Green New Deal, and campaign finance reform.
Buttigieg performed well in the early stages of the Democratic primary, but he eventually dropped out of the race and endorsed Joe Biden. After Biden's victory in the general election, Buttigieg was appointed Secretary of Transportation.
Personal Life
Buttigieg is married to Chasten Glezman, a junior high school teacher. They have two adopted children, a son and a daughter.
Buttigieg is the first openly gay Cabinet member in U.S. history.
